Railroads time eras through history

How are the railroad eras been divided;

Trough history a lot changed on the railroads. This can be easily displayed in different eras. Each era got its own clear visible features. Many scale model railroad tracks are been made to a certain era. Also very common is that 2 or 3 eras are used on the same scale model railroad track. With this overview it makes a little clear in what years a railroad era must be. It can be a guideline for purchasing materials and making scenery.

Period I = 1835 up till 1925

The starting phase of railroads, the first public and private railroad networks started. A big variation of train types which where most colorful are typical for this time.

Period II = 1925 up till 1945

Big national railroad companies started in Europe. National and public railroad companies where combined in Germany to make one big company DRG, Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft. A smaller variation of vehicles was the was the result of this.

Period III= 1945 up till 1970

Time period with steam-, diesel- and electric driven trains is charasteristic. In the western part of Germany the DB is the only railroad company, Deutsche Bahn, in the eastern part of Germany is this the DR, Deutsche Reichsbahn.

Period IV = 1970 up till 1990

Start of defined UIC-computer inscriptions over entire Europe. New color concepts started and wagons become to be used on international tracks.

Period V = 1990 up till 2006

Some of the national railroad companies became private. The German DB and DR are combined to DB AG, Deutsche Bahn AG. Regional tracks are taken over by private railroad companies.

Period VI = 2006 up till now

New inscriptions are introduced by the UIC and trains get a 12-letter UIC number with a land characteristic.

The German railroad companies are as following classified in the periods II t/m IV :

DRG Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft

DB Deutsche Bundesbahn

The Swiss railroad companies are as following classified in the periods II t/m IV:

SBB Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (Duits)

CFF Chemins de fer Fédéraux Suisses (Frans)

FFS Ferrovie Federali Svizzere (Italiaans)

BLS BLS Lötschenbergbahn AG (Alpen Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon)

AAE Ahaus-Alstetter Eisenbahn GmbH (boxed cars rental)
